Pilbara Girl

In 2011 we were finally able to produce the full Pilbara Girl Program entirely in the Pilbara region. Thanks to the support of corporate and community sponsors, funding bodies and an investment from the Commonwealth Government, the 2011 Pilbara Girl Program expanded dramatically from 2010 to include 3 communities (Port Hedland, Roebourne and Karratha) and its own final event held in Karratha.

23 participants took part in the 2011 Pilbara Girl program which included specific workshops followed by showcase events in selected communities. 4 specialised facilitators and a tour manager undertook a 3 week road trip throughout selected communities. Kimberley Girl Cadets Buna-Tuaty Poelina and Marlikka Perdrisat, and Goolarri’s Mikey Torres delivered the 2 weeks of Pilbara Girl heats workshops whilst Kira Fong travelled to the Pilbara to work with Mikey to deliver workshops to the finalists. Nommie Wade managed the tour and travelled on the road with the facilitators whilst Andrew Chambers managed the event production. The final event in Karratha was attended by Goolarri Managing director Kevin Fong and BAMA directors Kevin Puertollano and Dianne Appleby. Goolarri Media staff were supported in some communities by community coordinators to ensure successful delivery of all activities and to assist with community engagement.

5 days of intensive workshops were delivered for the heats in Port Hedland and Roebourne culminating in the community event on respective Friday evenings. 10 of the 23 participants went on to do an additional 5 days of higher level leadership workshops and a professional photo shoot followed by involvement in the Pilbara Girl Final. Activities included professional and personal development workshops, deportment and grooming classes, public speaking and speaking with the media sessions, 2 community heat events and the Pilbara Girl Final. All Pilbara Girl events were filmed by local organisation Ngarda Media with footage being supplied to Goolarri Media to complete the editing and packaging process for release of a Pilbara Girl DVD.

The expansion of the Pilbara Girl Program was a dream come true for Goolarri Media who realise the benefits of this valuable initiative and for many years have wanted to expand the program to more communities stimulating more encouraging outcomes. Each participant emerged from the Pilbara Girl experience with a renewed sense of confidence on which they can continue to build.
